Recreational Water

Chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant in swimming pools, but it can be used to keep both swimming pools and spas free from harmful bacteria.

When chlorine reacts with nitrogen containing molecules in the water, they form combined chlorines.

Although combined chlorines still have disinfection properties, they are not as efficient as free chlorine.

Palintest founder, Dr Arthur T Palin, pioneered the use of DPD for monitoring levels of free chlorine and total chlorine, and by subtraction the level of combined chlorine.

It is important to monitor both free and total chlorine to prevent over-chlorination and ensure there is sufficient chlorine present in the correct form to disinfect the water effectively, keeping bathers safe.

Water balance tests include the Langelier Saturation Index, which requires measurement of the temperature and total dissolved solids of the water sample as well as calcium hardness, total alkalinity, and pH.
